I hear a rattling noise under my 1999 Subaru Impreza, hatchback, AWD.?

The heat shield and muffler seem to be tight. I did smell fumes. This has been going on for two days. Also, I noticed the rubber boot on the penger side CV joint is ripped. Any help?
