Why do people feel compelled to label their thoughts in accordance with some established school of thought?

Perhaps some do need that validation. Although I think the sensible reason people use terms such as "existentialist" is that it's easier than saying "one opposed to rationalism and empiricism, that stresses the individual's unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his or her choices," every time the idea comes up in speech.
